Wondering where all the good food (and good prices) at Sultan Center have gone? Ask one of their purchasing people.
Don’t know if you have noticed or not, but I can’t find anything there anymore. The only things that have kept me going to TSC are Tampax and Alpo dog food and they’re gone recently too. It feels a lot like 2003 when all the items popular to Western people disappeared for a while and all of us were hoarding. I’m back to hoarding. (And if there ever comes a time when I can’t find Doritos, I’m going to strike.)
The reason why many Western peeps (like me) shop there is for brand recognition. And lately… well…. I’d rather pay co-op prices to get brands that I don’t know rather than Sultan Center prices for stuff that I don’t know.
I know that historically, TSC caters to Westerners, so I am wondering…. Judging from their listing of purchasers…. Why don’t they have westerners on staff? Hmmmmm. Lebanese seems to be the nationality of choice.
Heard they hired a new guy from Ireland . That’s one. Heard he’s firing lots of people and in NOT a nice way (security guards escorting good people to the door without warning or the ability to say goodbye to their colleagues). Fascinating; that seems to be TSC’s M.O.
TSC dudes: Wake up and smell the stale produce! You’ve got serious competition on the market and your customers are going to stray – and fast.
I totally agree with you! Over the past 3 months I had bought some Asian foodstuff and then suddenly, they just started disappearing-- examples include tofu, bamboo shoots, fresh vacuum-packed noodles and now overnight they are gone. When I ask the staff, they are also baffled and will say,"Ya, we used to carry that and I thought it was right over here" and now.... gone.
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to the leaving country part?? You dont seemed to focus on moving on? Are you staying?
ReplyDeleteEveryone has moved to Lulu :) They have a lot of British brands in and are even shipping in British bread! The new store in Qurain in really good and there prices are much better that Sultan.
ReplyDeleteTry Lulu Hypermarket in Ghurain it's luvverly! Boots have tampax :O)
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more! They're losing market share with lightening speed ... and the way they treat their employees like heartless machines is absolutely ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteYes, Lulu has a great selection-- unfortunately, the one I live close to is quite a dump and not like the others I keep hearing about.
ReplyDeleteDoes the new Lulu carry any American products, like Ocean Spray (light) Cranberry Juice?? Sultan has it sometimes, but disappears fast...
ReplyDeleteDG
ReplyDeletemaybe related to ITT won post and Sultan group ,
Yesterday I saw a fleet of brand new Mercedes trucks and refrigerators trailers being washed in shuwaikh industrial area with the word Anham on them .So it seems they are performing the contract
I noticed that also, and I asked their staff whether TSC is getting bankrupt. It seems they have new management who has some targets to achieve regardless of the brands. TSC will be soon like any coop
ReplyDeleteThey employed someone from Ireland? WHAT IS THAT ALL ABOUT?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, listen hun, head over to LuLu Hypermarket, the new one in the Qurain industrial area...you will FIND EVERYTHING YOU NEED......
It's a westerners wonderland there now. I haent stepped foot inside a Sultan Centre in four months. Wallah.
Yes it seems everyone is happier these days at Lulu. Not only do they have an excellent array of products but also at cheaper prices in comparisson to Sultan. I love the fact that I can go to the checkout without having to stand and WAIT while being squashed and trying my best to avoid abuse from wild little boys ( Salwa and jabriya branch)
ReplyDeleteThe stsff and management at Lulu are always at hand and ready to help, they listen to their customers requests, basically Lulu in my opinion have replaced Sultan Centre as "the top" supermarket in Kuwait, after 20 + years in Kuwait it is a welcomed breath of fresh air!!
So there you have it, folks. Lulu seems to have everyone's vote. I did notice a LOT of westerners there the several times I went too.
ReplyDeleteSultan Center - why don't you openly ask your customers for feedback? Maybe place ads in the newspapers read by westerners and ask what they think? I believe you have a pretty good cross-sampling of comments here - why not do a market survey for yourself (a little free marketing consultation for ya there...)
And let the truth be told :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you DG :-) Makes me feel a bit better.
I find it interesting that you want the place to have so many westerners. If I said that I wanted the Walmarts here to have more Asians and hispanics, people wouldnt like that very much and show their white pride.
ReplyDeleteMarkie -
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting that you think that I want more white people in the Sultan Center.
I am an AMERICAN (which includes Asians, Hispanics, Arabs, African-Americans, Jews and a whole slew of other cultures - I can go on, but you get the point). I would like to see more AMERICAN/western products in TSC - as TSC has always imported AMERICAN products since its inception.
I don't care about Walmart or white pride.
I do care about shopping locally and being able to find brands that I recognize.
