Mario's World blog has a review of a new Kuwaiti restaurant, Beit Dickson, in Salmiya. I received a flyer for it when I was at Rumaithiya co-op parking lot. The place looks amazing and I'm dying to go.

Prank calling Beit Dickson:
(Briddish accent) 'Hellooooooo! May I speak to Um Saud?'
Minu?
Um Saud my dear chap. Mrs. Dickson.
Eh?
What about Colonel Dickson, is he in?
Do they have a strong dinning out culture in Kuwait?

ReplyDeleteI don't like the restaurant name either.
ReplyDeleteBeit Dickson is located on the Gulf Road opposite the fish market past Sharq Mall. That is the ONLY Beit Dickson (the original former home of Colonel and Mrs. Dickson) and the government should not allow anyone to profit by using the name for other ventures. It's wrong and comes across as profiteering.
Why not call it "Kuwait Heritage" or something like that? If they want to honor the Dickson name, maybe some kind of memorial would be more appropriate.

ReplyDeleteUh, yeah. You can't throw a rock without hitting a restaurant in Kuwait. We eat, we shop; we shop, we eat.
Walked past it tonight and went inside to have a look at the menu. Turns out that the only thing in English is the name of the place - the menu is in Arabic only! Ok, the staff was very friendly - some of them spoke English - and said that they would be happy to translate and make recommendations and that they were going to print menus in English but hadn't gotten to it yet.
ReplyDeleteI am happy to see this kind of place in Kuwait (whether the name is appropriate or not) - would be nice if expatriates could also bring their families and visitors from abroad along for a bit of Kuwaiti culture & food.
I accept its very nice place or restaurant to visit and eat
ReplyDeleteMy business colleague who has been in Kuwait since 1971 and I visited Beit for lunch on Dec 6, 2010. Decor striking, food average and costly, wait staff cannot communicate correctly. We were overcharged on a dish and when we complained the manager argued with us. Instant turnoff. Caesars and Mais Alghanim would never have done that and their food is infinitely better. We will neither visit nor recommend this place to eat.

I think the name's clever. It grabs your attention and is in fact a positive reflection of our history, not a negative one.
